Sam Shaba was born in 1984 on the 8th of April, in a Family of 6 then, now 5. He grew up in the remote part North of Malawi, in a village called Chanunkha Shaba, Mzimba District T.A M’mbwerwa. At the age of 5, Sam’s mother bought him a Vimbuza drum, which he grew up playing and getting familiar with local music.
He spent time playing local music so much so that It became part of his life. As a young boy staying in rural area, didn’t have an opportunity of playing music using the modern instruments but he loved listening to the good sound from different parts of Africa.
Sam had sung in a church choir as a young boy. He had latter in the years moved to town where he was introduced to different types of music from all over the world and started fusing his local music with international.
He later on joined a school of music called, my brothers keeper school of music and movement. Here he was introduced to basic music theory and piano lessons. Surrounded by a lot of young people who were playing music instruments, Sam was fired up to take on the challenge of learning instruments at a professional level.
He started getting so much interest in the sweet sound of the guitar, and he had his mind made up to become what used to be a mare dream.
Furthermore, Sam enrolled with the African Bible College where he beefed up his music knowledge of theory, guitar and vocals. After finishing the school, He started studying jazz music from across the world and especially that from Africa. Invested so much time in practicing jazz guitar. He had spent about five years to come up with his first jazz project titled “The African way”.
Sam, looks up to African Jazz guys like Richard Bona and Jonathan Butler, Wambali Mkandawire many more that have managed to take the African sound across the world and made a notable difference.
