Kennedy Mwenya, widely known by his stage name Spyral Mwenya, was a trailblazing new age Hip-Hop artist from Blantyre, Malawi. Born on June 13, 1995, in Chikulamayembe Village, located in the Rumphi district, Spyral emerged as a defining figure in Malawi’s modern Hip-Hop scene.
Spyral began making notable strides in the music industry around 2016, quickly capturing attention for his unique lyrical style and versatile delivery. As a member of the rap duo Proud, he played a vital role in shaping the new wave of urban music in Malawi. Over time, he succeeded in building and maintaining a name that resonated with fans across the country.
In 2021, Spyral released what many critics and fans consider one of the finest Hip-Hop projects to emerge from Malawi, an LP titled "HIGH HOPES". The album gained widespread acclaim, with its lead single “Ndimaganizo Bho” becoming a fan favorite and solidifying his place among the nation’s top-tier lyricists.
Beyond music, Spyral was also a man of many talents. A holder of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, he excelled in the tech and creative industries, particularly in graphic design. His outstanding design work earned him recognition as one of the top graphic designers in Malawi,music promoter at malawi-music.com and he was serving as a designer for FD Communications at the time of his passing.
Tragically, Spyral Mwenya’s life was cut short following a car accident on June 25, 2024, while returning from a funeral for his aunt in Rumphi. He succumbed to his injuries at Mzuzu Central Hospital.
Though his journey was brief, Spyral Mwenya left behind a legacy of innovation, artistry, and inspiration. His dedication to his craft, both in music and design, continues to influence young creatives across Malawi.
