Biography
WalyCris was the artistic name of Wyson Laifoh, a Malawian musician born on 25 September 1997 at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Machinjiri, Blantyre. He was the firstborn in a family of four and was based in Blantyre, Malawi.
He completed his primary education at St. Kizito Primary School in Limbe and later attended Ngumbe Secondary School in Chileka, Blantyre. After secondary school, WalyCris pursued Motor Vehicle Engineering at Soche Technical College (SOTEC), a skill he practiced part-time alongside his music career.
WalyCris began his music journey in 2015, officially stepping into the limelight in 2017. His debut song, “Main Chick,” produced by MushBeats, marked the start of his promising career, with the music video shot by Ronely Patricks of OneDot Filmworks. Over the years, he released several notable songs, including “Ndine Watsopano” featuring Flame, “Tsonga” featuring Bucci, “Wataya Mwayi” featuring Ababa Sergeant, and “Maliya,” which topped the Fresh on Zodiak TV chart for four consecutive weeks.
His music was inspired by renowned Malawian artists such as David Kalilani, Lucius Banda, Dan Lu, Lulu, Dare Devils, and King Hyphen (formerly Young Kay). Known for his passion, versatility, and dedication, WalyCris aspired to become an international artist while uplifting and mentoring upcoming musicians to achieve their dreams.
Throughout his career, he worked with several producers, including Jay Emm, Sispence, Santos, Raj Records, and MushBeats, and collaborated with visual creatives such as Ronely Patricks and Layonz Graphics.
Tragically, WalyCris passed away on 23 December 2022 in a road accident while returning from South Africa, where he had gone for a music show. His passing came at a time when his song “Achalume” was gaining massive traction, marking a painful loss to the Malawian music industry.
WalyCris will be remembered for his talent, ambition, and the legacy he left behind an artist whose light shone brightly and whose music continues to live on.
